Why Hermit cookies?

I am forever trying new cookie recipes. They don’t make the pieces as cool new cookies and I’m excited to share them with you, but are these cookies? It is hermit cookies that bring success.

The abundance of nuts and raisins may not excite everyone, but I tell you, it has been a hit with us and the friends who shared it.

As evidenced by squares of butter tart, stuffed apple, oatmeal cookies, nuts, and raisins that make for some of the best desserts, right?

And for a few breakfast ideas you’re sure to love, try pecan praline French toast, carrot oats, a favorite slow oat dish, and Irish raisin soda bread.

I sent this last batch of Hermit Cookies Recipe with a girlfriend last week and texted a few minutes after she left the house with the words, “Oh my word. These raisin cookies… are awesome!”

This is a very powerful rave review and I agree 100%! The flavors of cinnamon and spices are strong enough. These cookies are a fun variation on the classic Oatmeal Raisin cookie, a favorite of many.

However, if raisins aren’t your thing, these cookies are really great if you double up on the nuts and skip the raisins. Make them your friends!

This is a recipe from the Treasured Heritage Cookbook: John J.E. Miller’s Family Favorites. I met Esther Yoder at her bakery last year while visiting Sugar Creek, Ohio.

After ringing out too many baked goods for two people to enjoy (no regrets at all), I spied this charming cookbook with all of her grandmother’s recipes in it.

I have a weakness for cookbooks, especially family books. This sweet cookbook is a compilation of all their family’s old recipes and I very much enjoy playing with the recipes.

I usually replace butter with butter, ghee, or ghee in old cookbooks. It is simply easier for me, since I always have butter on hand, but I rarely have others.

Feel free to use original ghee instead if that’s easier for you. However, since the water content will be different, you will need to add 1/3 cup of milk to the recipe to achieve the desired results. (Milk is not necessary when using butter to make these cookies.)
