Country Style Barbecue Ribs Ingredients Notes

  • Country style pork ribs This item is usually easy to find inexpensively at most grocery stores. My local Costco carries it in a great package at a great price. See below for more details on this cut.
  • Onion – big yellow onion
  • barbecue sauce Your favorite brand.
  • I willow Reduced sodium is always the best option.
  • liquid smoke A little goes a long way to add a great smoky flavor to recipes like these. It is totally worth the cost of keeping this item in your pantry.
  • Rub smoked pork spices This delicious mixture contains Smoked paprika, granulated garlic (or garlic powder), onion powder, brown sugar, cumin, salt, freshly ground black pepper and a pinch of cayenne pepper..

What are Country Style Barbecue Ribs?

Country-style boneless ribs are a budget-friendly cut of pork with a rib-like taste and texture. Despite its name, it is actually not from the rib at all but is instead from or near the shoulder. This piece is very marbled and has a great flavor and because it is usually boneless, it is very meaty. Low and slow cooking in a crock pot or pressure cooking will make it moist and fork tender.

How to make Country Style Barbecue Ribs

  1. Dry the ribs with paper towels and if they are large, cut them into serving-size pieces (5 to 6 inches each). Combine ingredients in Smoky Pork Spice Rub and sprinkle over ribs, covering all sides. Add the BBQ sauce, soy sauce, water, and liquid smoke to a small bowl and stir until combined. Sit aside.
  2. Place the onion pieces in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker and place the marinated ribs on top.
  3. Pour the sauce over it, and cover the tops of the ribs. Simmer over low heat for 6 to 8 hours or on high heat for 3 to 4 hours, until very soft but not crumbly.
  1. Preheat your oven for grilling. Use tongs to transfer the cooked ribs to a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil.
  2. Spread generously with extra BBQ sauce – don’t hold back! Give them a nice paint.
  3. Grill the ribs until browned and the sauce caramelized and ready to serve.

Country style instant ribs

  • Follow the steps above to prepare the ribs, and make the Smoky Pork seasoning rub and sauce.
  • Place the onion pieces in the bottom of the Instant Pot and place the seasoned ribs on top. Pour the sauce over it, and cover the tops of the ribs.
  • Cook on high pressure for 35 minutes. Allow the Instant Pot to naturally release for 10 minutes, then manually release any remaining pressure.
  • Finish at the bottom of the grill as detailed in the last step of the Slow Cooker instructions.

Make it a freezer meal

Another great aspect of this recipe is that it works great as a ready-made freeze meal. Simply chop and season the ribs and prepare the sauce as directed in the recipe. Transfer the uncooked ribs to a freezer-safe plastic bag and pour the sauce over it. Remove as much air as possible from the bag, seal it, and label it. Transfer the bag to the freezer and use within 4 to 5 months for best quality.

When you’re ready to cook the ribs, let them thaw safely in the refrigerator overnight and then continue with the recipe, as directed by the slow cooker or instant pot method.

Make suggestions

The delicious sauce and mushy fork quality of these rustic barbecue ribs practically require mashed potatoes as far as I’m concerned. I love serving it with buttermilk mashed potatoes and a simple vegetarian side like steamed broccoli or green beans.
