Classic Salisbury Steak Recipe

I am so happy to share with you this Salisbury Steak recipe today! I’ve been working on this meal for a while (and I’m not mad about it!) It’s a family favorite and easy to prepare! Inexpensive, very quick to put together, and amazing taste! I’ve fed this to my family, as well as an extended family group and it’s got glowing reviews. I hope you all love it equally!

But first, what is Salisbury steak?

Salisbury steak is an American dish made with ground beef, onions and breadcrumbs, made into pancakes and cooked in brown broth. Mushrooms are also traditionally added.

What is the difference between hamburger steak and salisbury steak?

Salisbury Steak is actually a version of Hamburger Steak (technically Hamburger Steak as the German says). Although Salisbury Steak differs from Hamburger Steak in that it allows for other filling and flavorful ingredients (much like meatloaf) while Hamburger Steak is just meat and seasoning.

Classic Salisbury Steak Recipe main components

Now because Salisbury Steak can be mixed with all kinds of other ingredients, I made sure the ingredients I included were added to flavor while also making sure those kids stayed hydrated. So, that’s all you need to prepare the steak:

  • minced meatThe main ingredient for our steaks. If you’re looking for something a little healthier, consider swapping this out for ground turkey. I used 93/7 lean ground beef.
  • Onion – To add a nice onion flavour. Don’t worry if you don’t like onions, you’ll hardly notice them there.
  • egg – This is to help bind all the components together.
  • Breadcrumbs with garlic and herbs You can also use plain breadcrumbs here and add garlic powder and Italian seasoning to get the same kind of flavor.
  • Worcestershire sauce – For its delicious flavor and moisture.
  • pure milk – It’s primarily used to keep Salisbury steaks tender, but it also adds more moisture. Yes, you can use any type of milk.
  • Salt and Pepper – Seasoning, as you go, is very important for flavor, so don’t skip these two things.
  • olive oil – This is for cooking onions and steaks.

Salisbury steak mushroom broth

The broth for this Salisbury Steak is a classic dish made with butter and mushrooms, thickened with flour and flavored with beef sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Sounds like an odd combination but I promise you’ll love this Salisbury Steak recipe!!

  • ghee – To add flavor and to fry mushrooms.
  • mushrooms – The earthy flavor goes well with the gravy mix and is the perfect addition to a Salisbury steak. If mushrooms aren’t your thing, discard them.
  • All-purpose flour This is to thicken the broth. Cornstarch is a good alternative here, too.
  • Beef is consumed – This is basically drained and concentrated beef broth with flavour! It’s one of my all-time favorite ingredients.
  • beef broth – It also has beef flavor but is thinner than consumer.
  • Worcestershire sauce – I use this for extra umami.
  • Dijon mustard – It gives a very small kick to the broth.
  • Salt and Pepper – season to taste.

How to make Classic Salisbury Steak Recipe

The hardest part about this recipe is the time it takes to make it. However, I intentionally made this recipe a big one so you can enjoy your leftovers days later! (And you’ll want leftovers.) Just be sure to use a large, deep skillet, such as a cast iron skillet, so you have enough room for all that broth!

Form Salisbury Steak Patties

Combine file minced meat with the Onion, eggs, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire, milk, salt and pepper. Divide the mixture into portions and shape into oval patties. I made 8 pancakes.

How thick is the steak?

The thickness of the steak will determine how long it will take to cook. Try to be no more than an inch thick.

Why does Salisbury steak fall apart?

Salisbury steaks don’t hold their shape for several reasons, but there are two main reasons: (1) they weren’t shaped well and/or (2) they were overcooked.

If you think the pancakes aren’t stiff enough or just don’t stay together, consider adding another egg. Freezing for 10 minutes and then wiping them well once they hit the bowl will help them keep their shape. Overcooking can also cause the pancakes to fall apart. Eggs in Salisbury Steak to help hold it together and keep its shape. The protein in egg whites is what holds all the ingredients together. Overcooking can cause this protein to break down after spending a lot of time cooking, so once you’re done cooking, let it warm before serving.
