While ice cream is a staple in our year-round freezer, the additional possibilities of this particular ice cream are endless. I filled this ice cream with bits of brownies, bits of cookie dough, bits of oatmeal cookies, and swirls of salted caramel sauce.

I also topped this ice cream with warm chocolate sauce, my favorite of all, this simple raspberry sauce. There was still a combination we didn’t like.

I probably don’t need to mention it, but this homemade vanilla ice cream is pretty much a dream come true to top a Southern Peach Cobbler, Grandma’s Cherry Flop, Old Fashioned Apple Crisp, or Strawberry Rhubarb Crunch.

How to make The Best Ice Cream Recipe

With just five simple ingredients, you can have smooth and creamy vanilla ice cream on hand, too. When I started making homemade ice cream, I initially followed the recommended recipes and tried many custard-style ice creams. Traditionally, many ice creams start with egg custard.

While the custard base makes great ice cream, don’t get me wrong, custard ice cream is as rich as can be, and I quickly discovered it was nothing. Besides, I’ll be honest, I like to keep things simpler and no more complicated in the kitchen whenever possible.

When I discovered Philadelphia-style ice cream, it was a complete game-changer. Philadelphia-style ice cream is simply ice cream made without eggs. I’ve played with basic proportions and methods over the past few years and now I’m telling you that this recipe is ready, the best simple vanilla ice cream I’ve ever made.

The most common question I get is whether it is possible to make ice cream without a machine. The answer is yes. You can make ice cream without a machine. Find the full directions here!

Homemade vanilla ice cream

This ice cream is dead simple. Stir everything together in a saucepan, simmer, stir, cool, and freeze; Less than 10 minutes from the actual preparation time. If you put the mixture together in the morning, refrigerate it, and then mix it up in the afternoon, we easily take the mixture in the same evening.

However, if you are in a hurry, you can simply chill everything together and pour it into the machine. I can’t deny that simmering it long enough to dissolve the sugar and then cooling it again makes it even better. Honestly, though, I am impatient about half the time, so I skip the step on low heat frequently. This is great ice cream however you make it.

This ice cream works beautifully in every ice cream maker I’ve tried. Manual crank, electric crank, freezer bowl, ice cream compressor. Homemade ice cream gets great in every single one! (And yes, I might have a little ice cream, because I have both of these machines and love them all!)

  1. Pour a glass of cream into a saucepan, add sugar and salt. Scrape the vanilla seeds into the saucepan, then add the vanilla to the bowl.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and add the rest of the cream, milk, and vanilla. Stir until combined and cool in the refrigerator.
  3. When you’re ready to shake, remove the bag of vanilla, whisk the mixture again, and pour it into the ice cream maker. Mix according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Transfer ready-made ice cream to an airtight container and place in the freezer until ready to serve.

Feel free to skip the boiling step and whisk everything together, then pour directly into the ice cream maker. Ice cream is absolutely delicious this way, as well as when it is cooked and cooled first.
