Today I’m posting about a super patriotic, fresh and fun super patriotic cake recipe! I took my vanilla cake recipe and made it into the shape of a sheet cake and then added a delicious cream cheese frosting. Next, I decorated everything with fresh berries and more frosting. It kind of reminds me of a fruit pizza but it’s made with a cake base instead of a sugar cookie base.

I love a good party and this cake is the perfect way to celebrate. Here are some American holidays to make this Classic Flag Cake Recipe for:

Classic Flag Cake Recipe main components

Combine these ingredients to make this flag cake from scratch! If homemade is not your thing, you can always use vanilla or white cake mix and two tubs of decorations. All decorating instructions remain the same.

For cake

  • FlourIt’s obviously required for structure and a bit* of gluten to hold this cake together.
  • Baking soda + baking powder– Our fermenting agents for this vanilla cake. I like to use both.
  • saltBelieve it or not, salt makes a huge difference in the final product of your final cake. Instead of sweet over sweet, the salt helps balance out the flavor and accentuate the vanilla flavor.
  • granulated sugar– Used to make sweet cake.
  • vanilla extractWell, friends, you will want to use good vanilla extract. Look for “pure vanilla extract” instead of imitation vanilla for best results. (Both will work, I only recommend pure vanilla extract. This is great.)
  • Butter + vegetable oil– I love combining these two into cakes. The butter gives a great flavor and the vegetable oil helps keep the cake moist. Canola oil also works in place of vegetable oil.
  • eggs + egg whiteEggs are necessary for the formation of the cake, but the egg whites are whisked into the mixture to raise and lighten the cake.
  • MilkIt is used for moisture and the protein in the milk gives a soft crumb texture to the finished cake.

  • salted butter – relaxed. If you are using unsalted butter, just add a pinch of salt later.
  • cream cheese – relaxed. This is where all the delicious cream cheese flavor comes in.
  • soft sugar – To sweeten and to help increase its thickness.
  • vanilla extract – To soften it up a bit and give it a lot of flavor.

  • berries + berries – You can also use thinly sliced ​​strawberries if raspberries are not for you. Also, don’t let that stop you from creating any kind of flag you want. There are all kinds of colorful fruits, so the sky is the limit!

How to make Classic Flag Cake Recipe

Step 1: Preheat + Prepare

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Line the tray with parchment paper and/or spray well with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.

Step 2: Make the cake batter

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined. Sit aside. In a liquid measuring cup, stir together milk and vanilla. Sit aside.

In a separate large bowl, mix together butter, oil, and sugar until combined. Mix the eggs with the egg whites, one at a time, until the mixture is very light and fluffy. Scrape the sides of the bowl and mix again briefly.

Instead of adding the flour mixture with the milk mixture, be sure to start and end with the flour. Scrape the sides and mix again to ensure a smooth mixture.

Step Three: Baking + Cooling

Pour into the prepared sheet tray and smooth the top. Bake for 15 minutes in the bottom 2/3 of the oven. The cake will be done when a toothpick comes out clean, or is mostly clean with a few damp crumbs. Depending on your oven, this will take more or less time. Anywhere between 12-20 minutes.

Cool completely before decorating and decorating.

Step 4: Making cream cheese

Put all ingredients in a large bowl. Stir with a hand mixer (or stand mixer) until completely combined and thick and smooth. Scrape the sides and flip again briefly to ensure smooth frosting. Use it as desired. If you do not like cream cheese, you can use only butter vanilla. (You’ll want to double the recipe if you’re using my own.)

Step 5: Decorate

Put half the amount of cream cheese on a layer of the cooled cake. It doesn’t have to be perfect because it’s covered in berries and more frost.

Using a toothpick or a butter knife, best mark the American flag as you can. I don’t need all thirteen lines, I only had room for 7.

Fill the upper left rectangle with blueberries. Then instead of adding berries to each flag line. It started and ended with a red line (four red lines and three white lines).

With remaining cream cheese frosting, place in a piping bag with a star-shaped tip. Tube over a couple of “stars” and then connect two lines of white tape all around.

Store leftover flag cake recipe

Because this recipe requires freezing the cream cheese, any leftovers should be stored in the refrigerator. Cover with plastic wrap and store for up to 3 days after that, the berries tend to curl and the base begins to get a little damp. While it is still edible, I recommend eating this flag cake for the first 24 hours.

Make-Ahead + Freezing Instructions

Make this flag cake in advance by making the vanilla cake and cream cheesecake in advance. Freeze and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days (reserve a little of the frozen cream cheese for later). Then when you’re ready to serve, wash and dry those berries and go decorating for the town.

Freezes

You can even freeze this recipe in portions and then assemble it the day you plan to serve it. Simply wrap the cake layer in plastic wrap a few times and then freeze it for up to three months. Similarly, you can freeze cream cheese in a separate container for the same amount of time. Let both ingredients thaw for about a day. Beat the cream cheese cream quickly in a stand mixer or with a hand mixer, then use as usual. Top it with fresh fruit and you’ll have a great dessert to share!
