We had neighbors in Vancouver, where I grew up, who were Hawaiian, or Samoan, actually I can’t remember, but either way, they’d have the whole neighborhood and cook a giant pig on the floor.
I haven’t had much good food before, however Pulling pork from Hawaii was definitely my favorite. It was very tender, juicy, delicious, and didn’t have much space at all. At least not the way we think about seasoning things, which Americans tend to be loads of spices, sauces, ingredients, etc. These things were very simple and very delicious. So I made my own, in the slow cooker.

This ham is really great and it was one of the many recipes that I made/tried with no intention of photographing it or using it on the site and then it turned out so great that I knew I had no choice but to roast the whole new ham. Needless to say, we ate a lot of pork for two weeks. it was amazing.
Or at least C. thought she was obsessed with pork. It’s her ultimate favorite food alongside pancakes with the best homemade drink ever, strawberries and fresh peas. I love that she loves peas. Phew!
It’s perfect for those killer nachos with next day’s pina colada, or pulled pork sliders. It goes well with coconut rice.
What are the ingredients found in Slow Cooker Kalua Pork Recipe?
As promised … only 4 ingredients are required:
- Pork butt/shoulder
- Liquid smoke
- olive oil
- Hawaiian pink salt

What is Hawaiian pink salt?
Pink Hawaiian salt is sea salt from Hawaii. It gets its pink color from Hawaiian red clay. Red clay gives a subtle flavor to sea salt.
So this ham has only four ingredients, but the star or main ingredient is pink Hawaiian salt. It’s actually not as difficult as you think to find. Multiple stores carry it here, and we usually buy our stores in Harmons.
How to make Slow Cooker Kalua Pork Recipe

Basically, you stab the pork (I know, it gets a little crazy), rub both sides with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Let everything slow to simmer for 8 hours. I’m serious, don’t try to rush into this. Chop after 7 hours, then place back in the slow cooker and cook for the remaining 1 hour. This is. amazing thing.
Prepare pork butt the same way by stabbing it and rubbing it with olive oil and then salt. Put them in a baking dish, then cook in a preheated oven for 12-15 hours. You want an internal temperature of 195-205 degrees. Take it out of the oven, let it rest for an hour, and then chop it.
The same setting as the other two methods and then place it in a smoker group at 225 degrees. You’ll want to set it fat side up. Add a pot of water to the side of the ham or to the bottom of the rack to help the ham keep moist.
How long will pulled pork keep?
- Leftover homemade ham will keep for 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator.
- It should be covered or put in an airtight storage bag.
Can you freeze pork kalua?
- You can freeze pulled pork for later use.
- Cover well with plastic and foil, or place in a heavy-duty freezer bag and freeze.
- Pulled pork will keep in the refrigerator for 6-8 months.

Pulled Pork Kalua is so tender, juicy, and delicious, it’s made with just 4 ingredients!
- 3-pound Ass / Boneless pork shoulder The bone will require additional cooking time, up to 1 hour
- 1 Tablespoon Liquid smoke
- 1 1/2 big spoons olive oil
- 2 big spoons Hawaiian pink salt

- Stab the pork on all sides a few times, 3-4 good, and massage with olive oil.
- Sprinkle salt on each side and place in a slow saucepan with liquid smoke for 8-10 hours, then remove from the slow cooker and cut with two forks, then place it again in the slow cooker for an additional hour and enjoy.
Oven method or smoker method
- Set the oven to 225 and prepare as normal.
- Put the pork in a frying pan and bake for 12-15 hours. If you’re into a smoker, add a pot of water to the side or under the rack to help retain moisture.
- Take it out of the oven to rest for an hour, then chop it.
Pulled pork will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days
